Artists Behind the Ink: Versus
Location: United Kingdom
Ever since bursting onto the scene just a few years ago, Alberto Cuerva (also known as Versus) has attracted a slew of worldwide admirers of his stunning designs. Working largely free-hand, Alberto’s watercolor-inspired images strike a balance between being dreamlike and brilliantly vivid. When we came across his Instagram page and learned about his unique process, we knew we had to reach out to meet the artist behind the ink.
How long have you been interested in art?
I've been drawing since I was a kid and have always maintained an interest in art, particularly painting and sculpture. I tried many other techniques before tattooing, including watercolor, oil painting, acrylic, spray and glass art.
How long have you been tattooing?
I studied art and design before becoming a tattoo artist. I'm 26 now and I started tattooing four years ago.
So how did you develop your style?
It's hard to explain. Most of the tattoos I do are free-hand, so I just develop and design them as I go—depending on what I would like to do or experiment with that day. At this point, the client pretty much tells me what they want and I have the freedom to create it.
How has your style evolved?
I always try to evolve by experimenting with adding different elements to the designs to see what happens. Then I learn from that.
So you just opened your own shop, Overlook Tattoo. What inspired you to go out on your own?
I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so I decided to follow that and open my own studio. In a year or so I'd like to grow and have a few other artists working with me.
